Magic place near the coast

by Angela

Here is a photo we took while travelling along the Great Ocean Road, about 4 years ago. It is a magic place, very, very close to the coast.

When you think Ocean Road you think coastline, cliffs, stones, collapsed arches, roaring waves and beaches.

We saw that all, but then the road cut a bit inland. Out of the blue, we saw the mild slopes of the hills and a green pasture in front of us. We stopped at a small cafe that had a couple of benches for the tired travellers to breathe the fresh air and absorb the beauty of the landscape, before ordering a well deserved lunch.

Seeing that image was totally unexpected - we probably were less than a kilometer away from the coast, but it felt like being part of the Heidi in the Alps story.

I am not sure where exactly the place was, probably somewhere near the famous 12 Apostles. If you recognize it let me know please.

Hi Angela,

Thanks for your story!

It looks very much like the green hills behind the tiny village of Glenaire, near Castle Cove. It's an absolutely fantastic place!

There's a piece of land across from the Cafe that I would very much like to buy (It's for sale now, but I don't have a spare $350,000 at the moment!)

I camped about 5 minutes from here every year when I was a kid, just down sand road, next to the cafe.

When I was a kid I used to think the hills looked like giant sleeping elephants!

If you're ever down here again, there's an equally stunning place with green rolling hills near Johanna Beach. Ken Duncan took a great photo there once. I'm pretty sure it's still available as a poster print (or you can wait until I have my prints for sale in the not too distant future!)
